Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden Monkey Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

Being gregarious creatures, golden monkeys reside in large groups in nuclear families made up of many females and a dominant male. In comparison to other primates (gorillas and chimpanzees), these monkeys are small and gregarious, and you may get up close and personal with them on the journey. In Uganda, golden monkey trekking takes place in the southwest of the country at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Golden monkey trekking also takes place in Rwanda.

As part of the Virunga Conservation Area, Mgahinga National Park is endowed with the most renowned primates, the golden monkey and mountain gorilla in their midst. The greatest park to trek the endangered golden monkey species. There are over 4,000 of them in the jungle is Mgahinga National Park. Trekking for golden monkeys in Mgahinga National Park is a unique experience; it’s incredibly cool to travel through an all-bamboo forest. Tracking golden monkeys takes all day, whereas it only takes four hours.

Golden Monkey Trekking

The monkeys are stunningly beautiful, with amazing colours. The trip to the monkeys is easier than tracking gorillas, even though they dwell high up in the bamboo trees and are a bit difficult to capture clearly. The hike is simple if you are an experienced hiker and are accustomed to hiking in mountainous terrain.

Volcanoes National Park is the location of Rwanda’s Golden Monkey Trekking, which provides an exhilarating encounter with these exquisite monkeys known as the Golden Monkeys. They also have a striking golden fur coat, which enhances their distinct beauty and makes them extremely beautiful to photograph. Since the renowned gorilla trip dominates the golden monkey expedition as well, it is typically undertaken as an add-on activity to gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

In Rwanda, there are golden monkey groups that are open for visits. These are found on Mount Sabinyo; the larger group consists of roughly ninety individuals. After beginning your journey, you find the monkeys and spend an hour with them before returning to the lodge for other alternative activities.

Cost of Golden Monkey Permits

Golden Monkey Tracking

Similar to licences for mountain gorillas and chimpanzees, a golden monkey trekking permit must be obtained before beginning a journey. Golden monkey trekking costs $50 per person and golden monkey habituation experience costs $100 per person; both activities are conducted in Mgahinga National Park. The cost of golden monkey permits in Rwanda is $100 per person, and there is no golden monkey experience available in Volcanoes National Park.

The National Parks main offices are where you may obtain the permit. The golden monkeys can only be interacted with by a maximum of six persons in the wild during this activity, which is limited to Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Park. Although it is less rigorous than trekking with gorillas, the age limit for individuals interested in trekking golden monkeys is 12 years old.
